Tendon Patience: Why Planche and Maltese Take Years

Everyone wants to know how long it takes to get a planche. Wrong question again โ€” the honest answer depends less on your muscle and almost entirely on tissue most people never think about: your tendons.

Muscle is fast. Give it a few weeks of consistent loading and it visibly responds โ€” more size, more output, a strength curve you can feel improving session to session. Tendons are not fast. They are slow, stubborn, and largely indifferent to your training log.

The tissue that doesn't care about your timeline

Planche and Maltese aren't strength moves in the way a heavy squat is a strength move. They are leverage moves that place enormous, sustained load through the wrist, elbow, and shoulder tendons โ€” tissue that has to physically remodel its collagen structure to survive that load without breaking down. A 2022 systematic review in Sports Medicine, pulling together dozens of studies on lower-limb tendons under mechanical loading, found that tendons adapt through two separate mechanisms: changes in the material itself โ€” more collagen, better cross-linking โ€” and an increase in the tendon's actual cross-sectional area. The second mechanism, the structural one, is the slow one. Some of the studies in that review found continued tendon stiffness adaptation even after four years of consistent loading in young athletes, with no ceiling in sight.

Four years. Not four weeks. Read that again before you rage-quit your first failed planche lean.

This is precisely why so many calisthenics athletes get hurt chasing a straight-bar planche on a muscle-only timeline. Your shoulders can produce the strength to hold the position long before your tendons can safely absorb the load of holding it. The muscle writes a check the connective tissue can't yet cash.

What I actually do about it

My approach changed the day I stopped measuring progress in "can I hold this yet" and started measuring it in "did I load this today without pain tomorrow." Progressions โ€” tuck, advanced tuck, straddle, full โ€” exist for exactly this reason: they are not steps for your muscles, they are steps for your tendons to catch up without getting injured trying to skip ahead.

The back injury taught me this lesson at a cost I don't want to pay twice. Three months of bed rest is a brutal audit of every shortcut you took getting there. When I came back, I rebuilt from a single bodyweight squat and refused to rush the reintroduction of load, no matter how good a session felt. Tissue that has been dormant doesn't care that your mind remembers what you used to lift. It has to be re-earned, physically, on its own schedule.

Where it actually hurts if you rush it

The elbow and wrist take the worst of it in planche training specifically, because the lever gets longer as you progress from tuck toward full โ€” more of your bodyweight sits further from the joint, and the tendons crossing the elbow are exactly the tissue least forgiving of a rushed timeline. It's a slow, low-grade ache at first, easy to train through, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Muscle soreness tells you to rest for a day. Tendon irritation tells you to rest for a month, and it tells you quietly enough that most people don't listen until it's screaming.

I run badminton and long-distance running alongside the strength work partly for this reason โ€” they load a different profile of connective tissue at a different rhythm, so the wrist and elbow tendons doing the leverage work get real recovery windows instead of daily accumulating stress with zero deload. Cross-training isn't cross-training for the muscle here. It's active rest for the tendon.

Patience as a training variable

I now treat tendon adaptation as a training variable with the same respect I give sets and reps. That means longer holds at lower intensities before adding lean angle, deliberate deload weeks even when I feel strong, and total refusal to let a good day override a slow plan. The plan is slow on purpose. It is slow because the tissue underneath the muscle is slow, and no amount of willpower changes collagen synthesis rates.

This is also where tendon patience and the 40% rule diverge in an important way. The 40% rule is about pushing past a mental quit signal within a single set. Tendon patience is closer to the opposite instinct โ€” knowing when NOT to push, because the thing limiting you isn't your nervous system lying to you, it's tissue telling the truth. Learning to tell the difference between "my mind is quitting early" and "my tendon needs another six months" is arguably the single most important skill in advanced calisthenics.

Reading the signal correctly

The hardest skill in this entire process is learning to distinguish two signals that feel almost identical in the moment: general fatigue, which you should push through, and specific joint or tendon irritation, which you should not. I use a simple filter now โ€” if the discomfort is diffuse, symmetric, and fades within the first few minutes of moving, it's fatigue, and the 40% rule applies. If it's localized to one spot, sharper than the surrounding soreness, or still there the next morning in the exact same place, it's a tendon telling me to back off, not a mind lying to me.

Getting that filter wrong in either direction is expensive. Treat every ache as a tendon warning and you'll never progress past the tuck. Treat every tendon warning as a mind games and you'll be back on bed rest inside a year. I know, because I've done both.

If you're chasing planche, Maltese, or any advanced lever, stop timing your progress against your muscles. Time it against your tendons instead. Give every progression step months, not weeks, load it consistently, back off the instant something feels sharp instead of tired, and accept that the slowest tissue in the chain sets the pace for the whole system. Rushing it doesn't get you there faster. It just gets you back to bed rest.
